Church of San Bartolomeo al Pozzo

Where are you

San Bartolomeo al Pozzo The Church was erected in the 14th century by the people of Pozzo when they moved to Castel Santa Maria. From the beginning, it had the title of a simple church-curate or chaplaincy. The current appearance of the church is due to Neo-Gothic renovations carried out at the beginning of the 20th century; however, fragments of 14th-century frescoes can still be seen in some sections. The interior has a single nave, with a trussed roof supported by exposed beams and punctuated by three pointed arches painted with alternating white and black bands. Along the walls runs an ornamental band with geometric motifs executed in the mid-20th century, while a slightly raised molding decorated with dentils runs along the side walls and the presbyterial area of the church. The altar on the right wall, dedicated to the Madonna of Comfort, has Neo-Gothic
forms, as does the left one dedicated to the Sacred Heart and the main altar. Above the latter, the oil painting by Gregorio Pagani entitled Crucifixion with the Madonna and Saints Bartholomew, Nicholas, and Agatha, commissioned by the Concini family, has recently been relocated. A stone washbasin and a tabernacle in pietra serena are preserved in the sacristy. The church was the seat of the Company of the Madonna of Comfort, founded in 1881 and later unified in 1969 with that of the Blessed Sacrament.
