Palazzo Concini

Where are you

This noble residence was built in the 16th century by Bartolomeo Concini and his son GiovanBattista within the quarter of San Niccolò al Terraio.
The building is distinguished by its elegant arched windows on the façade and by the vaultedinteriors supported by polygonal pillars with classical-style capitals.
At the top of the façade, the original “R-shaped” iron hooks—once used to support wooden rods for hanging laundry or curtains—can still be seen.
The palace’s semi-basement, recently cleaned and consolidated, houses the old wine cellars. After restoration, the building was reopened to the public and now serves as an exhibition space for the Municipality of Terranuova.
Bartolomeo Concini (1507–1578) belonged to an ancient noble Tuscan family descending directlyfrom the Counts of Catenaia. He was a distinguished jurist and became confidant and first secretaryto Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici of Tuscany, from whom he received important offices and the title of Count of the Penna.
He married Margherita Bartoli (sister of Cosimo Bartoli, Florentine ambassador to Venice, and daughter of Matteo, Podestà of Pistoia in 1513) and had, among other children, Giovanni Battista — lecturer in Canon Law at the University of Pisa (1560), Auditor of the Sacred Rota in Mantua(1562), Knight and Commander of the Order of Saint Stephen (1563), acting Grand Chancellor of the same Order (1569), ambassador to Vienna (1571 and 1577), Auditor of the Grand Ducaljurisdiction and First Secretary of the Grand Duke of Florence (1576), and Senator (1576).

Giovanni Battista married Camilla Miniati, daughter of Antonio, and had several children. Amongthem were Bartolomeo, who became a Tuscan Senator in 1615 and married Alessandra Antinori, and Concino, who followed Maria de’ Medici to France upon her marriage to King Henry IV. Concino became First Gentleman of the Bedchamber, Governor of Amiens (1612–1616), and Marquis of Ancre.
After the assassination of Henry IV, he fell from grace and, caught in a conspiracy involving the young King Louis XIII, was killed in an ambush at the Louvre in 1617.
