Itinerary 3

Palaces, Oratories and Hospices

This itinerary illustrates the evolution of architecture, from the simple constructions of the city’sfounding period—sturdy, two-story terraced houses—to their sixteenth-century transformation intorow houses or noble palaces, with the remodeling of façades as in the case of Palazzo Concini.
Some, such as Palazzo Medici, were enhanced with adjoining courtyards. Of particular note, as in the case of the Franciscan hospice, is the assistance offered both to pilgrims during their travels and to the needy in daily life, such as at the Hospice of the Poor.
